A natural infrageneric classification for Cicer (Leguminosae, Cicereae) Naturalis
Davies, A.M.R.; Maxted, N.; Maesen, L.J.G. van der.
A comprehensive morphological survey and analysis of all taxonomically recognised wild species of Cicer L. (Leguminosae, Cicereae) is presented. The data (104 characters from 152 herbarium specimens representing 34 of the 44 recognised taxa in the genus Cicer with supplementary data for the remaining taxa taken from the literature) were analysed using multivariate statistics (cluster analysis, factor analysis and ordination techniques). The results are discussed in the context of extant classifications and the re-organisation of a novel infrageneric classification also incorporating information from published genetic data. A revised classification with 3 subgenera, 5 sections and 2 series is proposed.

Endocarp morphology of African Celtis (Celtidaceae/Ulmaceae) Naturalis
Sattarian, A.; Maesen, L.J.G. van der.
Endocarp morphology of 14 species of mainly African Celtis was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Macro- and micro-morphological characters included endocarp shape, colour, size, surrounding rim and SEM examination of the outer layer of the endocarp. Different classes of shape and sculpture were recognised. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on endocarp characters is provided.

Eriosema arenicola stat. nov. and some notes on Eriosema glomeratum (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) in West Africa Naturalis
Maesen, L.J.G. van der; Wieringa, J.J..
Eriosema arenicola deserves species status. Its nearest relatives are discussed and a key to distinguish the taxa is provided. Three maps depict the occurrence of the taxa.

Reviews Naturalis
Maesen, L.J.G. van der; Balgooy, M.M.J. van; Adema, F.; Keßler, P.J.A..
A joint project of the National Herbarium, Addis Ababa University, and the Department of Systematic Botany, Uppsala University, the Ethiopian Flora Project that was launched in 1980, continues to produce results since the first volume (in fact Vol. 3) was published. Many efforts have gone into fund raising, and SIDA, the Swedish International Development Cooperation (earlier SAREC), and the Ethiopian Government have contributed considerable sums of money to achieve the publication of the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The editorial team in Uppsala, Addis Ababa and Eritrea has to be congratulated that within two years after the appearance of both volumes of 1995 another issue has left the press. In this extremely rich flora region, with altitudes ranging...

Seed morphology of some tribes of Brassicaceae (implications for taxonomy and species identification for the flora of Egypt) Naturalis
Khalik, K. Abdel; Maesen, L.J.G. van der.
Seed morphology of 45 taxa belonging to 23 genera of Brassicaceae were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The taxa included representatives of the tribes Arabideae, Euclidieae, Hesperideae, Lunarieae, Matthioleae, and Sisymbrieae, which all occur in Egypt. Macro- and micromorphological characters, including seed shape, colour, size, the position of the radicle relative to the cotyledons, epidermal cell shape, anticlinal boundaries, outer periclinal cell wall and relief of outer cell walls, are presented. Three types of basic anticlinal cell wall boundaries are recognised and six different shapes of the outer periclinal cell wall are described. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on seed characters is provided.
